The collection consists of four items: galley proof of Barker's poem, Sestina at 34, with handwritten corrections, for Penguin new writing no. 33-36, circa 1950; printed playscript of Barker's play, In the shade of the old apple tree, c1958, with pencilled note about another 1958 production; a Challenge duplicate book, including several handwritten poems, with the title Notes and verses 1964, and interior title Epistles in Anacreonics to Dom; manuscript with title Maximes on the French nation, undated, with prose notes about France.

George Granville Barker (1913-1991), the English poet, was born in Essex. He taught in Japan and the United States as well as in England. His highly dramatic poems, often concerned with themes of remorse and pain, led critics to place him, perhaps misleadingly, among the 'New Apocalypse' movement.
